Spider Control Wellington

Spiders are not normally dangerous in New Zealand thankfully, but they do create an eyesore on the exterior of your home (webs).  A simple annual exterior barrier treatment solves this problem.

Whitetail Spider Image

Many people ring us worried about whitetail spiders so here is some information on them:

  • 12-17mm long with a distintive white patch on the end of the abdomen;
  • They can bite, but only if provoked;
  • The bite can be painful but there are no long lasting effects;
  • Are not poisonous to humans;
  • If bitten it is usually possible to catch the perpetrator easily, as they have very poor eyesight;
  • Its diet consists of only other spiders;
  • Preferred habitat is under dry bark;
  • Often seen inside houses looking for shelter from the light after hunting at night;
  • Hides in clothing, especially if its left lying around on the floor.

What do I do if I have been bitten by a spider?

If you suspect you have been bitten by a katipo or redback spider you need to seek urgent medical attanetion at your nearest hospital, medical centre or doctor.  Even if you do no immediately experience symptoms beyond the bite pain, you still need medical advice.

DO

  • Clean the wound with antiseptic or warm soapy water;
  • Place ice on the bite (not directly onto the skin) prior to travelling.

DON'T

  • apply pressure to the wound;
  • consume alcohol after being bitten.

Don't panic as serious reactions are uncommon and unlikely to develop in less than three hours.  Vemon is not always introduced with the bite, if it is most reactions are moderate.
